The “berber” style is everywhere tight now, and it’s true that the motifs we find on cushions, rugs and traditionnal poteries are splendid in theit simplicity,
Their relative simplicity being the key here for… DIY !
You need:
1- To make a standard sized cushion, sut 2 50 cm x 50 cm squares (2o in x 20 in)
2- Start imagining your motif, get inspired on Instagram and pinterest. Draw your motif of the wrong side of the fabric with a pencil. You can use a ruler and make it very symmetrical. I liked the imperfect hand drawn look (and in the end I didn’t even end up embroidering all my drawings!)
3- Cut a first piece of yarn (about 70 cm) and thread it on your needle. Knot the end and start embroidering by little sections (ideally not more than 1,5cm)
When you get to the end of your thread go through you last stich several times and knot (on the wrong side)
If you want to make longer lines, you back over them with smaller perpendicular lines (like I did for the diamonds)
you will get something like this:
4- Once you’re happy with your design, prepare to sew! Place tour zipper right sides together with one of the sides of your embroidered fabric (I wanted mine at the bottom). Then place the other piece so that when it’s flipped, the zipper is facing the outside and the fabric folded on itslef
5- Sew in place with a straight stitch. Leave a few cm at the ends
6- Place your two pieces of fabric right sides together and sew all around
7- Flip your cover and insert a cushion!
