Refashion velvet shirt into velvet dress

You know how much I love transforming second hand finds into more “wearable” pieces. This textured velvet top was had been hanging out in my “to transform” pile for a while, I was keeping it to make a skirt for the Holidays. When I was making it I realized I had enough fabric in the sleeves to make it a dress ! I wore it to the anniversary party of the Saint-Jude Gym & Spa in Montreal… and I won a 3 month membership (!!!!!) so it’s even a lucky dress !!

Here are the steps I followed to turn this velvet top into a velvet dress

1- I first check where to cut to have enough fabric for the skirt. For me right at the underarms in a straight line and it was perfect.

2- I sewed the rectangle I got to an elastic (making little pleats as I went along)

3- I took one of the sleeves and cut in in half (in two pieces)

4- I used the pieces to create two front parts. I tried on myself and pinned in place until I was satisfied.

5- With what i had leftover I made two long strips that I sewed to the front parts (to have them on my shoulders).
